The History of Candle Making

The art of making candles has been around since primitive times.

Naturally, as time went by they become much different in design than what they were back then. In the beginning, candles were a prerequisite for heat and light.

The 1st known use of candles is not fully known. Candles were also employed in ancient times in both Japan and China. These candles were made from wax removed from insects and seeds.

The taper candles of India were made of the wax removed from boiled cinnamon. It is thought American Indian's burned oily fish and the back of the Cerio tree. When settlers came to New England, they used similar methods to extract wax from bayberries. Many modern candle makers still use that process to make bayberry candles. Fat was the product used to make candles in the 1600's and 1700's. The product worked well but had a nasty odor, particularly when it was burning. Bees wax and paraffin wax both were introduced in the early 1800's, and fat stopped being used. Traveler merchants went door to door from city to city. While there, they made taper candles for people in their houses. While this seriously improved the candle making process, there were still issues with getting the candles to burn correctly. In the 1800's, candle makers felt the wick was the weakest area of the candle as well as the cause for defective burning patterns. A platted wick was developed in 1825 that appeared to seriously improve the burning of many kinds of candles.

By 1830, a method was in place to make candles using paraffin wax and molds. As gas and electricity were introduced, the candle making process continued to develop. It became way easier and quicker to melt the paraffin wax. It is thought the reason many of the components of candle making stayed the same, including the hand dipping process is usually because the recognition of candles lessened with the advent of electricity. Today, candle making is a famous art form.

There are numerous companies who make excellent candles with some extraordinarily unique fragrances. There are home businesses that still make their candles by home in their kitchen. Candle making is a great past-time and fun activity for everybody to be concerned in. Candles are now used more for luxury and pleasure than for light or heat. The candle industry continues to grow with new sorts of candles being introduced all of the time.
